New Single: Deftones - my mind is a mountain
Deftones have announced a new album, nearly five years after the release of their last album 'Ohms'. A new album of course means new music, the first snippet of which was dropped on July 10th, 'my mind is a mountain'. Was it worth the wait?
my mind is a mountain is a brief offering compared to the band's other work, but it wastes no time grabbing your attention the moment you hit play. A chugging guitar/drum beatdown gives way to passages that seemlessly alternate between delicate and venomous. Chino Moreno (vocals) is in great form here, his vocal range remains impressive even after all this time.
The bridge is a notable highlight, the use of reverb on the vocals invokes a dreamlike, cathartic sensation, one that long-time fans will no doubt be familiar with.
While I wouldn't rush to call this track innovative, the individual components of the Deftones formula are used in such a compelling way that I have been left feeling quite excited for what's coming next (especially with this track's shorter running time, I crave more). I hope that new bassist Fred Sablan will be given more of a chance to shine in future tracks.
All in all, my mind is a mountain is a promising sign of things to come. The boys are back and I'm all for it. 7.7/10.
